Searching on the Web

OmniWeb makes it easy to search your favorite websites using the search field available in the Navigation toolbar.

The Toolbar Search Field

The search field that appears in the default configuration for the Navigation toolbar comes with many popular sites that are available for searching. Simply choose a site from the menu that appears when you click the magnifying glass, type your search term(s), then hit Enter, and the results will be returned in the browser window.

Each Search Shortcut that appears in the menu is configured using the Shortcuts preferences.

You can easily add new sites to the list by visiting the site you want to add, clicking into the search field available on the site, and then clicking the Add Search button that appears on the status bar ( ). You can also right-click or control click in the search field on the web page and choose Add Search Shortcut... from the contextual menu. If the search form on the website contains various options for configuring the search you will want to set those to the appropriate values before creating your new shortcut to ensure the correct query is submitted to the website when you use the search from the toolbar in the future.

When adding a new shortcut a dialog will appear that lets you choose a name for the shortcut as it will appear in the menu of available sites to search on.

OmniWeb will remember the last site you chose to search and will use that site for all future searches until you select a new one from the menu.

At any time you can easily get to the search field if it is in your toolbar by using the Search the Web ⌘⇧F command found under the Edit menu. If you have text selected on the current page when you perform this command, the search field is automatically populated with that text.

Since websites are constantly being updated, there is a chance that a Search Shortcut may stop working at some point. If this ever happens, visit the Shortcuts preferences to delete the shorcut. You can then recreate it again using the methods described above.
